Over the course of 12 months, the artwork was handcrafted character by character, totaling roughly 250 hours of work from start to finish. Characters from the Goudy Trajan and Bembo Pro typefaces form the Coliseum, also known as today as Colosseo (Italian) and originally known as Amphitheatrum Flavium (Latin).
Did an inventory today of the fonts donated to me by John D. Of the 17 different fonts, many are incomplete (not enough quantity per letter or number) or short altogether. What is complete - in pretty good condition:
Goudy Old Colony 12pt
Park Avenue 18pt
Garamond 18pt
Century Schoolbook Italian 18pt
Royal Script 18 pt
Tiffany 36pt
So useful in a one off sense. Not sure I’d build a library around any of these. But nice to have some different lead type on hand.
Of the remaining bunch I will have to decide if I want to try to fill the hand. Some aren’t identified, so that will be a challenge. So into storage they will go for now, properly labeled and sorted as best as possible. That will free up drawers for new type.
Some of these are in the California case drawer I need for my Caslon on order. So I will have to store the incomplete sets first in containers, freeing up that drawer, then put the complete sets above into those drawers. I wish all my drawers were the same layout but they aren’t. Oh well, at least I have a nice cabinet, with functional drawers. By the time I finish this project I should have 17 complete sets on hand (including the Caslon fonts on order) leaving me room to order 5 more.
I wonder what those will be…..different sizes in the Caslon probably.
I just ordered from M&H Foundry a suite of metal fonts that will represent my house font. It’s Caslon, and I got the regular, italic and bold, in 8, 12, and 24 pt. fonts, plus associated spaces and quads. Actually in the italic, the Caslon is a 14 pt. due to its shape.
